How Do You Keep a Clean and Healthy Home?

I really do love this time of year. Like a bear who’s been on hibernation, I feel like I am emerging from a cave and into bright sunshine. Never mind that the rest of my family have the sniffles and sneezes and other allergy symptoms, never mind that it also makes me feel like I have to clean the soot and grime from the abode; I am just glad to see the sun everyday and not have to wear a coat!

I look outside and I get excited to see the budding leaves on the trees. The pollen dust that is starting to blanket everything yellow is welcome to me! But then I am not sensitive to their allergens like the rest of the family is. So it’s left up to me to keep a haven for them inside our home.

As much as I would love to throw open the windows and let the spring breeze and sunshine in, they remain close for the moment until the pollen dies down. I have started to do some spring cleaning but as always, I have been kind of scattered and all over the place. I was glad to find this article on the Filtrete website as it creates a method to my madness.  I’ve reposted some of the tips from Laura Dellutri on the Filtrete’s Clear Advantages program here for you: Read more

How do you like your water?

pitcherDo you drink enough water? Or are you like some people we know who have to be forced to drink water and would rather fill themselves up with unnaturally sweetened concoctions? Maybe you just haven’t had good water.

We have ‘good water’ and all my daughters drink water without undue force. We don’t buy water either. We use the water straight from the tap, but we filter it. Twice.

My husband was really concerned, especially when the girls were young, about all the additives the city chooses to add to our water to keep it clean, to keep it safe and to keep us healthy. All good stuff, right? Well not always. My husband hates that they add all these chemicals and swears that he can taste it. So he filters our water twice to get as much of these particles out. We have a filter under the sink to filter the water coming in from the main supply. He installed the filters under the sink himself and it was actually pretty painless and the units are not that expensive. There are some aj madison coupons available online that can substantially reduce your savings. After the water is filered from the main supply, that water is then put into these filtered pitchers to be cooled in the refrigerator before drinking. When the girls were babies, as an added precaution he also used to boil the water when they were younger and we would use the water to mix their formulas.

To filter our water a second time, we use these Filtrete Water Pitchers (we have two). The girls love them because it makes the water taste like… well, WATER! No chemical tastes or smell, just fresh clean water! The girls take their water in reuseable bottles for the day. I don’t buy a lot of sodas or juices and they don’t drink much of them. They would rather bring water with them as they say it quenches their thirst and refreshes them during the day better than any of the sweetened drinks.
