Mochi

Mochi Wrap Mochi

If you are ever in Japan or at least going through a Japan airport, do yourself a favor and try these beautifully wrapped mochis. Mochi is a snack made of glutinous rice flour that has been flavored with a variety of flavors. My favorite from this box are the ones in yellow wrapping they are lemon flavored. The pink ones are strawberry flavored. The rest of the delectable morsels are rose scented, macha, orange, sesame, toasted sesame and other flavors that I couldn’t quite discern.Mochis are not too sweet, soft and slightly chewy. Just the perfect thing to have when you want something light that is also slightly exotic.

Furikake

FurikakeFurikake is what I call Japanese confetti. It is a Japanese condiment that consists of a mixture of finely shredded nori, the seaweed wrap used for sushi, mixed with other ingredients like sesame seed, ground fish, salt, sugar and seasonings like wasabi, egg and shiso among many. This condiment is used to flavor rice. Sprinkled over the white background of newly cooked rice, it would definitely whet your appetite. It certainly does mine. I could just eat furikake over rice and nothing else.

I recently made breakfast with furikake in our kitchen. Check it our, see if you like it.

Taqueria Lopez

When we have a hankering for some quick tacos, we sometimes go to Taqueria Lopez. Oddly enough, we’ve never eaten there, we always take the food home. It’s almost become our Mexican fast food place. Good bye, Taco Bell!

I was craving some menudo one night and didn’t really know any place in Durham that makes a good one, so I decided I’d give Lopez’ a try. I went home with this steaming bowl…

Menudo

Their menudo was ok (I still like the other menudo I wrote about before though). This one was simmered long enough so everything was soft and tender. It was a little too greasy for me though. I had to skim grease from the top of the soup. They gave a big enough serving that I was able to refrigerate the other half then right before heating up, I just lifted the layer of fat that coagulated on top. Sounds appetizing, yeah? Well if tripe isn’t your thing, how about some tacos?

Flying Pigs, Batman!

ChocoPig
You got that right, pigs are flying and in style!

I’m getting the feeling that the flavor of the year is bacon. I’ve been seeing things, strange and never before thought of things, flavored with bacon. So far on the food blogs I’ve seen bacon ice cream, bacon cakes, and now, bacon flavored chocolate!

You gotta try out this piggy treat. It’s perfect for Father’s Day!

Change is good sometimes…

My husband enjoys his daily glass of merlot, but I can’t help but wonder how he doesn’t ever get tired of drinking the same wine and brand all the time! I for one like trying new wines and different kinds of wines from pinks to reds to clear. I’m thinking of maybe joining some wine clubs just to get a little more variety in our kitchen. I’m just afraid the hubs will get spoiled if he knows a steady supply of vino is just waiting to steam into our kitchen. lol!
