Book: North Or Be Eaten
Author: Andrew Peterson
Readers thrilled to the phantasmagorical adventures in On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, Book One of the Wingfeather Saga. Now in Book Two, Janner, Tink, and Leeli Igiby, mom Nia, ex-pirate grandfather Podo, Peet the Sock Man, and trusty dog Nugget flee north to rebel headquarters.
Their escape brings readers to the very brink of Fingap Falls, over the Stony Mountains, and across the Ice Prairies, while villains galore try to stop the Igibys permanently. Fearsome toothy cows and horned hounds return, along with new dangers: a mad man running a fork factory, a den of rockroaches, and majestic talking sea dragons.
Andrew Peterson’s lovable characters create what FantasyBookCritic.com says made Book One “one of the best fantasy novels in a very long time,” and Book Two contains even more thrills, exploring “themes universal in nature, ranging from the classic good versus evil, to the importance of family, and burdens of responsibility.”
Andrew Peterson is the author of On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness The Ballad of Matthew’s Begats. He’s also the critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter and recording artist of ten albums, including Resurrection Letters II. He and his wife, Jamie, live with their two sons and one daughter in The Warren near Nashville, Tennessee. Visit Andrew’s websites: www.andrew-peterson.com and www.rabbitroom.com.
My girls and I have a running joke that we first judge books by their cover and second, that a good fantasy book must have a map. Well, this book has both! In addition, it also has illustrations dispersed throughout the book, giving readers a more accurate visualizations of the creatures in the book.
I just hate that this is the second book in the series and I hadn’t read the first yet. I hated doing that! My daughter stopped reading this book when she realized that it’s the second book. She refused to read it without first having read the first book. So, I went ahead and read it.
To my surprise, it stood well on its own! Even without the first book, I caught on to the story line immediately and immensely enjoyed the adventure. I could hardly put the book down and finished it in a couple of days. As the summary above indicated, this is about the Jewels or Anniera, a term used to refer to the royal heirs of Anniera, Janner, Tink and Leeli.
According to Annieran custom, the second son inherits the throne. That makes Tink, the second son, High King and the older brother, Janner, the Warden to the Throne. Janner is essentially his brother’s keeper. This custom ensures that the king will always have a protector in his older brother. Leeli, the youngest, is the Song Maiden of Anniera and commands the power of music.
In the first book, the children find out who they really are as Anniera by that time has fallen under Gnag the Nameless and the evil Fangs of Dang. By the time North or Be Eaten starts, the children along with their mother, Nia and Grandfather, Podo and Uncle Artham, also known as Peet, are on the run. They are trying to make their way north to the Ice Prairies where it is rumored that a band of rebels are hiding out and may be able to help them and protect them. Before they get to the Ice Prairies, the family battles monsters or all kinds and numerous characters come in touch with them. There are several unfinished story lines that remain unfinished in this adventure and I have a feeling that there is still more to come and I can’t wait! In the meantime, I think we will be ordering the first book so that we get the whole story.
In the meantime, if you’d like to read North or Be Eaten, I have one more copy of this book to giveaway, thanks to Staci Carmichael of WaterBrook Press, a division of Random House.
