When we have a hankering for some quick tacos, we sometimes go to Taqueria Lopez. Oddly enough, we’ve never eaten there, we always take the food home. It’s almost become our Mexican fast food place. Good bye, Taco Bell!
I was craving some menudo one night and didn’t really know any place in Durham that makes a good one, so I decided I’d give Lopez’ a try. I went home with this steaming bowl…

Their menudo was ok (I still like the other menudo I wrote about before though). This one was simmered long enough so everything was soft and tender. It was a little too greasy for me though. I had to skim grease from the top of the soup. They gave a big enough serving that I was able to refrigerate the other half then right before heating up, I just lifted the layer of fat that coagulated on top. Sounds appetizing, yeah? Well if tripe isn’t your thing, how about some tacos?

These were tacos de lengua (tongue) and cabeza (beef head). What? Don’t start squirming, they were really good!OK, OK, maybe you’re like my kids and husband who thought those were too ‘exotic’ and went with the safer, more common dishes instead.
Like quesadilla…

Bistek Asado…(grilled steak)

Bistek Ranchero…(Mexican steak with salsa)

and of course, can’t forget about the chips…

I don’t think it’s the greatest place for Mexican food, but they are good. Good enough that we go back every once in a while, even as we discover other places in Durham. If you’re around and would like a good place to for tacos in Durham, give them a try:

Oh yum. Looks like real food, unlike Taco Bell. I’d skip the “exotic” stuff. Heck, just the chips look heavenly. I’m hungry.

LOL! Tina, I perfectly understand. It’s definitely an acquired taste, these ‘exotic’ food stuffs
All I can say is, an ice cold beer makes all of them taste better.
