The Art of Selling Art

There are a great many fine artists out there but not everyone can sell their art or are even familiar with the business of selling art. Many still believe the “If you build it they will come” mantra which is fine for some people. There have been a few artists who were lucky enough to have been found and are able to make a living from their art.

For most artist though, having a place like Park West Gallery represent them and help them sell their creations may be the only way to get the exposure their work deserves. Park West Gallery conducts fine art auctions in the U.S. and Canada giving their select group of artists the attention they deserve. They even have an affiliate that conducts art auctions at sea, targetting the sea cruisers who often have the disposable income to affort fine art.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad

This book was given to my husband by a friend who was trying to convince him to go into business with him. One lazy afternoon with nothing to do, I picked up this book and started leafin through it. Before you know it, I had made myself comfortable and read through the entire book in a few hours.

It started out entertainingly enough. I enjoyed reading Robert Kiyosaki’s anecdotes about growing in Hawaii and stories about his first entrepreneureal forrays. Even though the condescending tone he took when describing his (seemingly responsible to me) poor dad who is also his poor dad, made me wary, I kept reading through his theories on assets and liabilities complete with illustrations, which by the way don’t look anything like the balance sheets you learned about in accounting class. He glowingly describes, on the other hand, the accomplishments and philosophy of his rich dad who is supposed to be a successful entrepreneur and basically goes by the belief that your money should be working for you and not you working for your money.

Like I said, although his description of his poor but also real dad made me uncomfortable, I could see how it could psych someone up to go out and try to succeed by investing and investing in riskier buy higher yielding rackets to amass assets quicker. What disappointed me about this book was that it got repetitive after a while, like he was padding the book, and it seemed to me that he was ultimately priming the reader to buy more books and games and to attend more seminars like the kind he gives for large amounts of money.

I’m glad to learn I wasnt’ alone in being skeptical of the claims by Mr. Kiyosaki.

Go ahead, ask!

Haven’t you wondered what readers of your blog think about certain things? Now you can ask them directly using polls that you create yourself. If you have teens, you would be familiar with MySpace. In my pre-computer days, we used to have little hand made books that we used to poll the likes and dislikes of our friends, but really the bottom line was we wented to know which boy liked us. Now, kids have MySpace and FaceBook and a bunch of other networking sites where they ask questions from Favorites to unmentionables. Now you can create easy myspace polls for free!

EasyPoll makes it easy to create your own customized survey or polls that you can post right on your website.

Shelfari

Do you like books? I don’t know if you’ve heard of Shelfari, but it is where you can share your bookshelf with other book lovers. You can check out my shelf and see what I’ve got on mine so far.

The books that I have on there, are the books I’ve been sleeping with lately. Those are the ones stacked around and above my bed :) I haven’t even been to the bookshelf yet. I don’t think I will get to the thousands though like some of the people on Shelfari. I do love my books and I have a hard time parting with them. If you have a Shelfari account, make sure you add me on your friends list so I can see what you’re reading too. I’ve found some of the best books by looking at what other people are reading and find interesting.

Money Stuff

Our vehicles play an important role in the way we live our life. Not counting it as a status symbol, our car is vital to us being able to make a living. We have to have one, in other words. Unless you can afford to pay for your vehicle in cash, which is what most financial gurus advice, you should try to find the best financing for your car, which, next to your home is probably the next biggest purchase you make. That’s why a broker can be a good resource. They have access to a number of financing options and you will be able choose the loan that best fits your car refinance needs, be it a lower finance rate or reduced monthly payments or both.
