Banished Words

Lake Superior State University just published the 2008 Banished Words List. In it’s 33rd year, this lists words that are banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness.

Sadly, here are some words or phrases that you may be familiar with but will no longer be able to use:

PERFECT STORM - has been over used and thus is no longer useable

WEBINAR - a seminar conducted over the web. Too bad I hadn’t heard of this word before it got banned. I so love made up words! :)

ORGANIC - gasp! I can’t be without this word!

POST 9/11 - this one, I’d be happy to never hear again

BACK IN THE DAY - oh but I like saying this one too! :(

EMOTIONAL - I can’t believe they would ban this word. They should ban its abbreviated form, EMO. I’m forever asking my daughters, ‘who’s emo?’

Head on over and look at the complete banished words list. If some of your favorite words are banned too, don’t fret. Apparently, they can resurrect banished words too. This year they are bringing back ‘truthiness’ which was banned last year.
